Memorial Set to Honor Life of Patty Berg

Berg founded the Area 1 Agency on Aging in 1980 and served as its executive director for nearly two decades, helping it to grow from a staff of four to more than 25, administering dozens of programs serving seniors in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. She also co-founded the Redwood Coast Jazz Festival as a fundraiser for local seniors services.

Event Sunday to Commemorate 140th Anniversary of Chinese Expulsion

In memory of the 140th anniversary of the government sanctioned expulsion of Chinese residents from Eureka, the Humboldt Asian and Pacific Islanders in Solidarity (HAPI), a DreamMaker Program of the Ink People Center for the Arts, is hosting an informal gathering, altar and walk at the Eureka Chinatown Mural on Sunday. The expulsion, which took place within a 24-hour period over Feb. 6 and Feb. 7, 1885, resulted in the mass forced removal of Chinese residents in Eureka.

Former Fortuna Councilmember Mobley Indicted for Fraud

“The scheme to defraud also included Mobley’s use of the Victim Company’s business credit card at Capitol One for personal expenses,” the indictment alleges. “These included cash advances at casinos, airfare and hotel expenses for personal travel, and other non-business expenses that were not authorized by the Victim Company.”

Fortuna: Councilmember Mobley Resigns Amid FBI Investigation

UPDATE: The Fortuna City Council voted unanimously Feb. 3 to solicit applications for the seat recently vacated by Councilmember Kris Mobley, who resigned last week, and appoint her replacement. Mobley informed the city she would be resigning her post, effective immediately, in an email last week and the city promptly issued a press release announcing her resignation, saying it came amid an FBI investigation into conduct unrelated to city business.

Arroyo began the two-hour meeting by walking attendees through the findings of her personal listening tour, in which she interviewed nearly four dozen local healthcare workers — from doctors, nurse practitioners and physicians’ assistants to CEOs, administrators and experts — to hear what they see as the challenges and opportunities facing the local industry, primarily with regards to recruiting and retaining practitioners. The conversations, Arroyo said, took place amid a national physician shortage, noting that some estimate the nation is currently 85,000 physicians short of what it needs, with physicians’ assistants and nurse practitioners in similarly high demand.

Eureka Group Marches in Resistance

More than 200 people joined the People’s March in Eureka at the Humboldt County courthouse on Saturday morning in the nationwide day of protest ahead of Trump’s second inauguration today. Eight years ago, more than 8,000 people appeared for the local Women’s March (now renamed as the People’s March) in Eureka, protesting Trump’s first inauguration in 2017.
