Federal Funding Freeze Hamstrings Wildfire Prevention Efforts

Cotton says the council has been working in a cooperative agreement with a handful of other nonprofits to administer $5.1 million in funding through the U.S. Forest Service for fire resiliency work in an area that ranks in the 90th percentile for fire risk according to the Federal Register. The funding was to be used to help landowners clear 100 feet of defensible space around their homes, identify water sources to be used to fight wildfires, create shaded fuel breaks protecting parts of the community and clearing ingresses and egresses to create both safe evacuation routes and clear access routes for firefighters and other first responders.

Access Humboldt to Host Sunshine Week Event

Access Humboldt will host a Sunshine Week event, featuring a panel discussion, an award presentation and reception, at the Eureka Theater from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on March 20. The event — dubbed Illuminate 2025 — is free and open to the community.

The Journal — as reported in the story “Fair Board Faces Critical Racing Decision Tomorrow” posted to the paper’s website Feb. 23 — notified Kenny that the board appeared to have violated the Ralph M. Brown Act, which is intended to ensure discussion and decisions important to the public occur in public. At the Feb. 24 meeting, Director Jack Rice, who was absent from the board’s Feb. 18 meeting, quizzed his fellow board members on the matter, saying he read an article about the decision and wanted to know what had been discussed.

A federal judge has dismissed a class action lawsuit filed in December against North Coast Congressmember Jared Huffman alleging he broke the law when he voted in favor of providing military aid to Israel. The lawsuit alleged Huffman’s 2024 vote to provide military aid to Israel, paid for by U.S. taxpayers, effectively funded genocide in violation of international and U.S. law.

And the clock is ticking, as if the association chooses to move forward with racing, it would have to apply for a license from the California Horse Racing Board no later than June, and would need to request dates prior to that, likely next month. And every week that passes without a decision one week less the association has to plan the meet or pivot to a new strategy that might make a fair without racing a success.
