Cal Poly Humboldt Scales Back Hotel Housing Plans as School Year Approaches

While enrollment remains unclear, what is clear is the university seems far less concerned about housing than it was just five months ago. After informing all returning students in February they would have to live off campus, and then backtracking with a plan that would allow 600 to remain on campus, the university announced a string of agreements with Arcata hotels and motels — the Comfort Inn, Super 8, Motel 6 and the Ramada Inn — that would see them managed by the university in a “bridge housing” solution that would accommodate as many as 430 students.

Willow Creek Pharmacy Closes

The Willow Creek Pharmacy has closed its doors, leaving scores of area residents worried they could be facing two hours of driving to fill their prescriptions, and that’s when the roads are open. The pharmacy closed July 14, reportedly with little notice, according to some patients and employees.

UPDATE: Eureka police have arrested a suspect in the case of a man “lit on fire” near the 400 block of A Street on July 12. “Through extensive investigation, Eureka Police detectives identified 60-year-old Vaughn Pernell Jones as the suspect,” an EPD press release states, noting that Pernell was arrested on a warrant for attempted murder and mayhem on the 100 block of Second Street on July 14.

Sheriff's Office Searching Near Ettersburg After Human Remains Found

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office is conducting a ground search near Ettersburg today for additional human remains after a jawbone was located in the Mattole River by California Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists on July 8. According to a HCSO news release, the call came in just before 8 p.m. and a deputy responded to the scene and took custody of the remains, which were found by Ettersburg bridge and identified as human.
