Dogs are no longer allowed at Eureka's Friday Night Market and Fourth of July festival after the city issued a press release about the policy change on June 25. The city cited that crowds have grown over the years with more than 13,000 people attending last year's Fourth of July festival and some 7,000 people at recent Friday Night Markets.

Along with a cadre of “elves,” Hurd welcomed untold thousands over the decades, making each one — whether new or returning — feel like family, often regaling them with stories and a look through his many photo albums as sounds from a player piano provided a musical backdrop.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has identified the deputy who fatally shot a suspect allegedly charging him with a knife on June 5 as Cpl. Bradford Anderson, a nine-year veteran of the office. Anderson remains on paid administrative leave, as is standard protocol, according to a press release.

As information continues to trickle out regarding the June 5 fatal shooting of a 29-year-old Simi Valley man by a Humboldt County sheriff’s deputy, a picture is emerging of the man who allegedly rushed a deputy with a knife having been in prolonged medical distress. According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a man who’d entered the Bear River Recreation Center with a bandaged, bloody arm “actively dripping blood throughout the facility,” and arrived to find Nicholas David Anderson uncooperative and refusing medical care.

After sweeping the Novato Knicks last week to open the summer, the Humboldt Crabs entered week two with a head of steam and would continue to roll. The pitching staff opened the week with back-to-back shutouts and the offense exploded, outscoring their opponents 23-0 over those two games.
