Local Commercial Crab Season Opener is Set

Get the butter ready, the crab is coming. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced today that the Dungeness commercial season opener for Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte counties is now set for Dec. 31 at 12:01 a.m., with a 64-hour gear setting period that will begin at 8:01 a.m. on Dec. 28.

A community Christmas gathering is set to take place Friday in hard-hit Rio Dell for Eel River Valley residents impacted by Tuesday morning's magnitude-6.4 earthquake. Scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Rio Dell Fire Hall, the event includes a Toys for Tots distribution, a visit from Santa and hot chocolate.

CHP Investigating Suspicious Death on 299

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a man found on State Route 299 near North Bank Road yesterday morning. Officers were dispatched after report at 11:53 a.m. that someone had found a possibly dead man and arrived to find a deceased adult male who appeared to have sustained fatal injuries in a collision.

OES: Earthquake Recovery Help is Available

With recovery efforts continuing in the Eel River Valley following Tuesday's magnitude 6.4 earthquake that left dozens of homes red-tagged and Rio Dell's water infrastructure badly damaged, the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services has put together a list of available services for those affected. The list, copied in its entirety below, includes everything from drinking water, food and shelter to cleanup assistance, grants and mental health counseling services.

Embattled Planning Commissioner Bongio Steps Down

Embattled longtime Humboldt County Planning Commissioner Alan Bongio, who was censured by the Board of Supervisors in September for comments widely construed as racist and biased while chairing a meeting in August, has stepped down. First District Supervisor Rex Bohn, who appointed Bongio to the commission and said in September he would not remove him from the post despite mounting pressure to do so, has indicated he intends to appoint Iver Skavdal to the position.

Food for People Food Distribution Events Happening Today

Food for People is holding an emergency food distribution of nonperishable pantry stables today from noon to 2 p.m. in Fortuna for those who lost food due to the earthquake and power outage. It will take place at Gene Lucas Center parking lot located at 3000 Newburg Road.

Fernbridge suffered significant damage in the quake and is currently closed to all but emergency vehicles.

The Ferndale Post Office is currently closed due to safety concerns and local residents who receive their mail there or need postal services are being directed to the Rio Dell Post Office on Wildwood Avenue. North Coast Congressmember Jared Huffman in a Facebook post today directed those having issues receiving their mail to contact staff at his Third Street Eureka office, which can be reached at (707) 407-3585.
