Eureka to Host Mental Health Town Hall

The city of Eureka and Humboldt County Behavior Health will host the first in what’s aimed to be a quarterly series of town hall meetings focused on community health Saturday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at Eureka City Hall, 531 K St. Topics for the series will revolve around mental health, substance abuse and homelessness in the local community, starting with Saturday’s “Mental Health 101.” Each event will feature a panel of professionals from varying backgrounds who will give presentations, followed by an opportunity for the public to ask questions.

Habitat for Humanity to Help Quake Victims Rebuild

Of the nearly 2,000 structures inspected since the 6.4 temblor and 5.4 aftershock struck, causing a combined $32 million in damage, 91 were deemed unsafe for occupation and more than another 350 were yellow-tagged, meaning a need for safety repairs, with more than 100 households displaced, most of those in the city of Rio Dell, which bore the brunt of the quakes. “Rebuilding will take time, and this partnership with Habitat for Humanity will bring the City of Rio Dell closer to our goal of ending earthquake-related displacement in our city,” said Rio Dell City Manager Kyle Knopp.

As the Journal has reported (“Profit … and Pain,” Nov. 17), state reports indicate that Humboldt County’s four primary skilled nursing facilities — all owned by Shlomo Rechnitz’s Brius Healthcare, which operates nearly 80 facilities throughout California — have increasingly used a complex web of so-called “related-party transactions” to rack up profits. These transactions allow a company to purchase goods or services from another company under the same ownership.

CHP Identifies 21-year-old Blue Lake Woman as Crash Victim

The California Highway Patrol has identified the driver killed in a single-car crash early Friday morning on U.S. Highway 101 in Arcata as Makayla Bernard, 21, of Blue Lake. According to the CHP, Bernard was driving an SUV southbound near West End Road shortly before 6 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, suddenly went off the roadway and overturned, coming to rest down the embankment.
