But the property remains under the control of Eureka City Schools, which is in active negotiations to sell it to the California Highway Patrol, which held a community meeting last month to gather input on its plans to convert the property into its new headquarters.

The friendly competition of the Chili Cook-off hosted by Guy Fieri at the Humboldt County fair took an unfriendly turn Aug. 24, with anti-gay slurs, property damage and the arrest of one contestant on suspicion of DUI. After an afternoon of cooking chili and making homophobic comments peppered with slurs, Loco Fish Co. owner Jayme Knight, who does not deny using the offensive language, drove his truck over supplies and equipment belonging to neighboring competitors Foggy Bottoms Boys, a family farming operation run by husbands Thomas and Cody Nicholson Stratton.

Alderpoint Man Found Guilty of Murder

A Humboldt County jury on Wednesday convicted an Alderpoint man of first degree murder for the fatal shooting of an acquaintance at his home in January of 2022. Jake Henry Combs, 31, faces 50 years in prison for the death of Trevor John Earley, 25, who was apparently shot in the head without warning at some point after he became upset and threatened Combs' large dog when he was bit in the face.

The Eureka Police Department has launched a death investigation after a man was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound early this morning. Officers responded to a report of a fight between a man and a woman involving a firearm the 3100 block of Ingley Street at 5:40 a.m. and arrived to find three women in front of the residence, according to a press release.

PLAs are pre-hire collective bargaining agreements typically negotiated between a project owner — in this case, the harbor district — and construction unions — in this case, the Building and Construction Trades Council of Humboldt and Del Norte counties and its state counterpart. The rough idea is that allowing workers to collectively bargain upfront gives them more leverage, keeping construction dollars local and often prioritizing investment in apprenticeship programs and other things of community benefit, while assuring project owners there won't be subject to work stoppages or other labor upheaval.
