McGuire: Judge's Tax Return Law Ruling 'Perplexing, Premature and Unneccesary'

A federal judge today granted a temporary injunction to block California’s recently signed legislation that requires presidential and gubernatorial candidates to release their tax returns to appear on the state’s primary ballot. According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, U.S. District Judge Morrison England Jr. said a final ruling in the case would be coming in the next few days but there would be “irreparable harm without temporary relief.”

Yesterday evening, shortly after 5:00 pm, the campus was hit with a deluge of water spanning approximately 45 minutes. The volume of water experienced in this short time period impacted several of our buildings.

Two Killed in Crash on State Route 299

On 09-18-2019, at approximately 1145 AM, the Humboldt Area CHP was notified of a two vehicle collision on SR-299, just west of the Willow Creek area. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and located a westbound 2010 Chevrolet armored truck had collided with an eastbound Mazda Sedan, causing fatal injuries to the driver and passenger of the Mazda.

Watch Out for Wandering Wildlife in the Roadways

Construction of Wildlife Undercrossings Scheduled near PlacervilleThe Camino Safety Project east of Placerville in El Dorado County will go to construction next year and will include a 12-foot by 12-foot box culvert as a wildlife undercrossing, eight-foot wildlife fence, and four wildlife escape ramps for animals that may become trapped in the right-of-way. Camera monitoring and wildlife tracking show the project on U.S. Highway 50 will benefit deer, coyotes, foxes, and other species.

Well-known local surfer David “Big Wave Dave" Hargrave died Monday after apparently suffering a medical issue while out on the waves, according to posts from his friends and his daughter. Fellow surfers went to his aid in the water off the North Jetty after he was seen floating face down and the U.S. Coast Guard and emergency ground personnel also responded.

Pedestrian Killed in Orleans Hit and Run

A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash on State Route 96 in Orleans shortly before 8 p.m. yesterday. According to the California Highway Patrol, the pedestrian — whose identity is being withheld until family can be notified — was reportedly walking in the middle of the roadway when hit by a black Toyota pickup that fled the scene southbound on State Route 96.

KEKA Pulls Out of Truckers Parade, Asks Others to Step Up

KEKA has announced the radio station will no longer present the annual Truckers Christmas Parade and is encouraging another business or community organization to take up the mantle. A release states that issues, including rising costs, declining participation and increased liability, led to the “difficult decision.”

Eureka and Humboldt County are parties to the tentative multi-billion-dollar settlement reached this week in a landmark lawsuit brought by thousands of municipal governments and more than two dozen states against Purdue Pharma, the company that created OxyContin. The settlement — which still needs to be ratified by plaintiffs and approved by the judge — reportedly involves Purdue Pharma filing for bankruptcy protection, dissolving and emerging as a new company, the profits of which would be distributed among plaintiffs in the case.
