Rio Dell Shooting Suspect Arrested in North Dakota

Police in North Dakota arrested Demetrius Coleman on Sunday and the Rio Dell Police Department announced today that he is the "primary suspect" in the fatal Aug. 29 shooting of Johnny Mack Renfro. Renfro was fatally shot Aug. 29 while walking away from his vehicle on Monument Road in Rio Dell.

After nearly two decades of planning, construction is slated to begin this year, with Caltrans receiving the go-ahead from a panel of somewhat dubious California Coastal commissioners, who made clear they believed the agency’s plans are blind to the looming threat of sea level rise, which could render the improvements moot. "This is ground zero," commission Chair Dayna Bochco said during the Aug. 7 meeting in Eureka.

UDPATE: Outage Due to Down Transmission Line, PG&E Says Restoration Likely by Late Morning

UPDATE: According to the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services, PG&E has confirmed that the cause of this morning’s widespread power outage is a transmission line impacted by winter weather. “PG&E has stated that restoration work has already begun and that most of Humboldt County should regain power by mid-late morning,” OES wrote in a Facebook post.

A, and I do expect the report this year, hopefully in the first half rather than the second.”

Eureka Man Killed in 101 Crash

A Eureka man was killed last night in a crash on the U.S. Highway 101 safety corridor. According to CHP, William Clymer, 42, was attempting to turn onto the Indianola Cutoff from the southbound lanes when his GMC Jimmy was hit on the passenger side by a vehicle traveling northbound and overturned.

In a bold strategy to drive down prescription drug prices, Gov. Gavin Newsom is proposing that California become the first state in the nation to establish its own generic drug label, making those medications available at an affordable price to the state’s 40 million residents. The proposal, part of the new state budget Newsom sent to the Legislature on Friday, would authorize the state to negotiate contracts with drugmakers to manufacture selected prescriptions on behalf of California.

King Tide Tour Gives Glimpse of Sea Level Rise

Dozens of people gathered in the rain at the Arcata Marsh on Saturday, Jan. 11, to view the highest tide of the year and listen to a discussion on how it can be seen as a preview of sea level rise and the effects it will have on both the city of Arcata and the world. Elliott Dabill, a retired high school biology teacher and current president of the board of directors for Friends of the Arcata Marsh, which sponsored the event, led a walk along the dikes and pathways through the marsh, explaining the science behind the King Tide event.

The destructive power of sneaker waves was on full display this past weekend, with a near miss at Moonstone Beach in Trinidad and a heartbreaking tragedy in Oregon, where two children — one of whom died while the other is missing — were swept off of a beach with their father, who survived. And, there was also the 2012 tragedy of a family caught in heavy surf while taking a walk at Big Lagoon Beach.
