Tuvan throat singing first came on my radar when I was a teenager, via the documentary Genghis Blues, where San Francisco blues musician Paul Pena learned the art over shortwave radio and was invited to Tuva to perform in one of their festivals. I even saw one of his hosts, the amazing Kongar-ool Ondar, do his harmonic singing live at Amoeba Records on Haight Street, a formative experience that is long gone but not forgotten, like the two artists I just mentioned.

DJ Kreepeeo is curating Phonk Crypt at the Miniplex tonight at 10 p.m. Expect a clubby appreciation of the mix-tape culture of the ’90s -’00s Dirty South sound, with all the grimy crunk and horror-show beauty that put underground rap on the map from Memphis to Houston.

Last week had some burnt offerings for the festival crowd of feel-goods out there and this week starts no differently. Papadosio is a quintet that recently hails from Asheville, North Carolina, which in my recollection was always a little hippie bubble in the mid-east South.

The Crisp Lounge is once again hosting comedian Pete Nelson’s multimedia show Pete’s Projecting Again. This is a gig working on becoming a regular institution, so you know what to do if you want to support local comedians throwing a variety show on one of our most notorious off-nights.

If you are a fan of the sort of music that is brewed up in jammy cauldrons for the purpose of making kombucha tonics of festival-friendly tunes whose experimentation never strays too far from note-filled dance grooves and good vibration flavors, then this is your night. Your only quarrel is figuring out how to navigate the fun between two venues within walking distance, Humbrews and the Arcata Theatre Lounge.

Tonight belongs to hip hop, at least over at Humbrews, anyway. From 6 to 9 p.m., there will be an all-ages cypher hosted by Chill Will and DJ Burnt Reynolds.

The Trinidad Town Hall is hosting the RLAD Jazz Quartet with special guest Rob Diggins on the “synth violin” with an evening of music under the inscrutable banner title J.G. “Jes Grew” Bach and Jazz Fusion. No idea what that’s all about.

Here’s a couple of shows with no cover if you are looking for some entertainment that won’t drain your resources for the coming weekend. At 7 p.m. at the Logger Bar, Bayou Swamis member and scene stalwart Jeff Landen brings the oomph and va-voom to a songbook of tunes — original and otherwise — that he will roll out on vox and guitar.

Speaking of the Miniplex, new weekly free queer dance event Big Mood will be rolling out tonight at 8 p.m., with sonic bounce provided by the venerable DJ Pandemonium Jones. If you are looking for an older institution, the Harlem Globetrotters are in town at the same hour for a showcase face off against their eternal rivals, the Washington Generals.
