Music Tonight: Thursday, Feb. 15

It isn’t exactly Metal Monday, but Savage Henry Comedy Club steams ahead tonight with a loud line-up of merry noisemakers. Two Bay Area bands are in the mix: post-hardcore act Drought and screamo group Máu, along with local grind duo Klod and the punks in Racket.

Eureka’s Humboldt Marble Weekend re-emerged post-COVID restrictions as the center of the marble universe last Saturday and Sunday as 28 marble makers and glass artists from around the U.S. showed off their wares to marble-art fans at vendor tables in the Wharfinger Building. The Tourist Prize was a random drawing among attendees who had stayed at a Eureka hotel or motel and presented their hotel receipt at the ticket table when entering the show.

Depending on what your personal belief system involves, today is either just another hump day (I mean the middle of the week, not the other thing), the beginning of Lent and/or the most romantic day of the year. I make no judgment, only merely speculate that there are a lot of different ways to perceive today.

From the heavy side of the jam band world of yesteryear comes one of the few groups in that genre whose work made it into rotation in my truck when I was in my 20s. Gov’t Mule is a powerhouse led by ace guitarist Warren Haynes, a man with the deft country-gentleman picking of an Allman Brother and the heavy low end riffage of Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi.

Comedy Tonight: Monday, Feb. 12

Comedian Evan Vest is holed up at Savage Henry Comedy Club for one of his curated movie screenings. This evening’s fare happens to be one of the worst films ever made, a movie so baffling and terrible that an entire cult industry has cropped up over the last two decades since its release.

Music Tonight: Saturday, Feb. 10

The Outer Space is hosting a Punks for Palestine benefit show tonight at 7:30 p.m., with bands Vegan Slaughterhouse, The Groomers, Brain Dead Rejects and Heart Eyes putting in their best effort for a good cause. The door is $5-$10 sliding scale, and the proceeds go to the American Near East Refugee Aid, providing relief for the affected civilians of Palestine and Lebanon, or as the government of Israel refers to them, “legitimate military targets.” Later on at Humbrews at 9 p.m., rough and sleazy rapper and street survivor Mickey Avalon is back in town to show us all that he ain’t down yet.

Humboldt Marble Weekend Clicks Off Tonight

Humboldt Marble Weekend, Feb. 9-11, brings together artists and collectors to celebrate contemporary marbles and marble hunting. Festivities kick off Friday, Feb. 9, with the Marble Makers Ball at the Glass Garage (215 C St., Eureka), where more than 20 glass artists will collaboratively create a marble to be exhibited at the Clarke Historical Museum, and attendees can enjoy a vegetarian chili feed and beverages for purchase (free admission). Activities continue Feb. 10-11, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wharfinger Building ($5, free for 12 and under) with glassblowing demonstrations, meet the marble makers, see glass art and more.

Music Tonight: Friday, Feb 9

Portland, Oregon’s Fox Medicine is a metal band with bright imagery, referring to their genre as “bubblegum doom.” Which is fairly on the mark, as far as I can recall from the last time I caught their act when they rolled through town. Tonight these glossy blitz-makers will be posted up at the Siren’s Song Tavern, with support from It & I and Death Doula.

It was great fun to once again attend the Inked hearts Tattoo Expo, its 14th annual event, in the Sapphire Palace at the Blue Lake Casino and Hotel Feb. 2-4, and see amazing tattoo artwork being created by many familiar tattoo artists. Ted and Amy Marks, owners of the local Nor Cal Tattoo shop, brought in more than 30 local and visiting artists for on-the-spot "ink" opportunities for tattoo lovers.

Redwood Curtain's Hurricane Diane Opens Friday

Hurricane Diane, Redwood Curtain Theatre's first show at the newly minted 5th and D Street Theater (300 Fifth St., Eureka), opens this weekend, with shows Friday, Feb. 9, and Saturday, Feb. 10, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m. ($20, $18 seniors/students).
