Music Tonight: Tuesday, June 18

At 8 p.m. this evening at the Miniplex, a very interesting and talented experimental instrumental trio will be playing on the screen-backed stage. Guitarist Bill Orcutt, saxophonist and composer Zoh Amba and drummer Chris Corsano are the members.

Molten plays the Shanty at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 16.

The Shanty knows about putting on great shows largely because the good people there don’t have to, it is secondary to the function of the place as one of the best bars in California (I’m dead serious). So when there is a show happening, it’s done for all the right reasons, without the desperation of a venue undercutting the fun.

Every so often I get to hop up on the table and cause a little ruckus by kicking off the cutlery and breaking some dinnerware in the service of crowing about a can’t-miss, great show put on by artists from the misty lost days in my old home of New Orleans. Tonight is just such a hoedown, because one of the most strange and fantastic duos from the 504 are playing in the 707.

The Outer Space is throwing a show tonight at 8 p.m., headlined by a new favorite band of mine, the funk and dance, honkin’ squawkers Hermit Crab. Also on the bill are spoken word artist Dylan Collins, dark folk act Tsunga and a performance art/electro drone group called KMRO, which stands for “Karma Means Revolutionary Overthrow.” And while that declaration seems to me to be wallowing in the contradictions of spiritual materialism more than moving in action based on dialectical historical measures, I’m willing to keep an open mind if you are.

Children and adult fairies, wizards and magical creatures of all kinds participated in costume competitions for prizes at the Fairy Festival.

The fourth annual — and what looks like the final — Enchanting Fairy Festival attracted another "Frolick of Fairies" in wild and magical costumes to the Arcata Plaza on Sunday. “The Fairy Festival has been a labor of love created by our tiny team with limited capacity,” said organizer Shoshanna about why she is stepping back.

The Basement is once again the place to be when it comes to pre-gaming for the coming end of the work week. Tonight, the doors open at 7 p.m., and sometime after that you will find a performance by one of our county’s more unique and industrious gigging acts, the Blueberry Hill Boogie Band.

The seventh annual Redwood Pride Summer Festival got underway Saturday morning under foggy skies with the rainbow-themed Pride Parade marching through Old Town Eureka. Redwood Pride organizer Laine Cohen led the Progress Pride flag-waving crowd of around 150 as they marched from the Adorni Center to C St. between First and Second Street Most marchers next headed for the Pride Day Festival at Jefferson Center.

Iowa is one of our more overlooked states and as someone who has been in nearly all 50, I have a soft spot for this land of corn and Slipknot near the disputed zone of the Midwest. I have seen things there and the place has its own taste, one I prefer over say, Oklahoma, which is the Devil’s domain.

Movie Tonight: Tuesday, June 11

The Miniplex is playing more movies again, which bodes well for the future, as the joint holds a place filled by nowhere else regarding showcasing enjoyable and offbeat fare. A case in point is tonight’s 7 p.m. presentation of The People’s Joker, an indie comic book movie parody directed and co-written by actress and comedian Vera Drew.

I always forget about Fairy Festival in Arcata, largely because I don’t have any children of my own and I was kicked out of Neverland 35 years ago for making fun of Peter Pan (“Baby Robin Hood” seems tame, but causes no joy in the land found after the second star to the right and straight on til morning). Anyway, it’s happening again on the Plaza today and so, of course, there must be the afterparties.
