The last day of July seems like a fine time to mention the free Eureka Summer Concert Series on Madaket Plaza at 6 p.m. This week’s talent is a band called Rash, which, despite the name, isn’t a crust punk band, but a Rush tribute band.

Under foggy skies on Thursday, the Bluegrass and Beyond show opened with the band A Banjo Makes 3 (Doc Woglom (left), Jim Hatchimonji, Larisa Sleep, Kevin Ralston, Charlie Sleep).

The Humboldt Folklife Society’s 46th annual Humboldt Folklife Festival featured a talented mix of performances by local musicians last week (July 22-26) under the sunny, then foggy, then sunny, then foggy … and finally sunny skies on closing day in Blue Lake. It was another successful festival, said longtime Folklife Festival volunteer and emcee Patrick Cleary, despite the late and unusual churn in the performer lineup.

Cory Hanson of psych-band Wand fame, blew a very big hole into the landscape for himself two years ago with the release of his acclaimed record Western Cum on Drag City Records. Since then, he has been only building on his fascinating take on psychedelia and rock weirdness.

A lot of mini-festival fun, unique in ways which are purely Humboldt County ways, is happening today and into the weekend. Starting at 3 p.m., it’s the first day of Outer Roominations outside of Loleta — more on that in Sunday’s entry — but my suggestion is a trip to Blue Lake, where at 7 p.m. at Prasch Hall you will find the Humboldt Folklife Festival Barn Dance.

Ramsey Isaacs plays the Arcata Playhouse at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 24.

The Creative Sanctuary’s fine cadre of jazz musicians continues rolling along with their excellent series celebrating the various satellite musicians associated with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Tonight’s gig at 7 p.m. at the Arcata Playhouse is a celebration of tenor sax player Benny Golson, whose brief stint with the Messengers produced the 1958 hard bop classic Moanin’.

At 7 p.m., Northtown Coffee is hosting an all- ages punk show with area maniacs Image Pit joining up with Cheshire High to represent the local scene and welcome L.A. pop punk touring act Pelo Grande to the 95521. $5-$20 sliding scale covers a lot of financial wiggle room.

One more shout out to the Outer Space, with an all-ages alt-folk show, featuring Autumnal from Colorado along with tourmate Public Diary and the dream-folk stylings of local band My Ex- Wife. It’s $10 for this one, with the usual caveat of no one getting turned away because they don’t have the dough.

Mondays are great for hidden gem shows and tonight is one such perfect jewel. Animal Piss, It’s Everywhere from Western Massachusetts not only sits on the shortlist for strangest band names to ever grace this page, but the band is also fantastic, with an outsider country sound that is so far beyond it should be considered trans-dimensional.

New York-based Jalopy Records act Jackson and the Janks are a garage band who pump out rhythm and blues motion under a gospel spell to make a fine night of dance floor ecstasy for all comers. Extra icing on the show is local band The Cowtown Sound, who will make it shake, rattle and roll while you boogie, baby.
