Fifty Shades of Noir

Those hot summer nights are about to get a little steamier as Rita Hayworth, Gloria Grahame and Gene Tierney set the screen alight this July at the Humboldt County Library as part of the Film Noir Classic Film Series (free). Film noir, the black and white film style featuring dark, shadowy cinematography and tough guys outwitted by damsels in distress (who are anything but), is the focus of this month's Classic Film Series.

Fourth of July is as American as, well, America. Barbecues, live music, gathering with friends and family, sitting in the grass under the stars watching the sky light up — the loud boom, crack and sizzle of fireworks.

If you think you saw a Hollywood actress around town, you probably did. Rowdy Kelly, who is scouting locations for the production company Woodshock LLC, won't confirm or deny whether Kirsten Dunst is in Humboldt for pre-production visit (and neither will Cassandra Hesseltine of the Humboldt Del Norte Film Commission), but the film's IMDB page lists her as cast in the film Woodshock from Coda Films.

The Humboldt County Fairgrounds bounces to furry, fluffy, wet-nosed life as pure-bred pooches and their owners strut their stuff at the Lost Coast Kennel Club Dog Show from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 28 (free entry, $5 parking).
