Witches Float: Photos from the Witches Paddle

A coven of witches gathered on Saturday afternoon at the Eureka Boat Basin public boat launch for the inaugural Witches Paddle in kayaks and canoes, and on stand-up paddle boards on Humboldt Bay. The local version of a nationwide event on the last weekend before Halloween headed east on the incoming tide to the the Samoa Bridge Boat Launch near Halvorsen Park before returning to the put-in location.

My original plan for Saturday evening was to stay home and watch the live-streamed Arcata Playhouse Arts presentation Intersections, Where We Meet. The Playhouse's theater venue has been closed for months and I was intrigued by the potential of seeing more than 40 performers and eight pieces featuring dancers, classical musicians, storytellers, a clown, poets and artists from secret locations all over Arcata, a local beach and Southern California — all from home.

Mr. Bungle Returns with Virtual Halloween Show

Depending on how big a fan you are of the Eureka-born band Mr. Bungle, maybe 2020 is balancing out. In an ominous, Eureka-heavy, black and white YouTube promo posted yesterday (see below), the band announced "The Night They Came Home," a live streaming Halloween concert featuring original members Mike Patton, Trevor Dunn and Trey Spruance, as well as "a couple of overpriced rock stars," guitarist Scott Ian of Anthrax and Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo.

UPDATE: Caltrans: Copyright Contract Grants Rights to Artists

UPDATE: The Journal has received clarification from Caltrans spokesperson Myles Cochran on the language and intent of the contract it sent to artists who painted Caltrans utility boxes as part of the Eureka Box Art program in 2018, stating that it in fact grants all control and ownership of the artwork to the artists.

Action! (With Some Distance)

The city of Eureka posted on its Facebook page that sections of Sequoia Park and its trails will be closed on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Tuesday, Oct. 6, when one of two film crews — it's not stated which — will be shooting at the location. The Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission had previously announced Humboldt would be hosting a couple of crews and that they would be following COVID-19 safety protocols, including working in pods, isolated from the community.

If you were clutching the pages of the New York Times Magazine's education issue this week or racking up screen time reading it online to learn about what's going on in schools and homes amid the pandemic across the U.S., you might have seen some local photography. The deceptively soothing cover image of a child at a backyard desk, as well as a few inside photos, is by Humboldt State University art department's lecturer Dave Woody.

Live Entertainment Still Canceled

Despite what you might be seeing around the county and online, live shows are still not allowed under our current phase of shelter in place. On Aug. 4, the Humboldt Reopening Certification Team sent an email around to restaurants reminding them of the regulations for outdoor tent dining (one side closed only), face coverings (still required outdoors) and the continuing ban on live performances.

If a small studio seems dodgy for recording with your band right now, the Morris Graves Museum of Art has another option for you: the free use of its beautiful rotunda, where you and your bandmates can spread out and enjoy the acoustics. And you can use your recording to do a little virtual busking with the Journal.
